Sellwood Playhouse

Today my friends Tom and Grace Grieve held an open house for their new theater, Sellwood Playhouse, in inner SE Portland, not far from historic Sellwood Bridge. This is a fulfillment of Tom’s long held dream to direct a local community theater. The historic church building owned by Open Bible Churches recently came available. It is a perfect location to host theater productions, special events such as weddings, and yes, even spiritually focused activities such as Bible studies in the days to come. Here is the entrance to the venue…

I’m so very happy for Tom and for the Sellwood community. The local population has a high concentration of artistic and performance oriented people. A number of theater groups are nearby, but until now there has been no actual dedicated theater location. So, Tom’s dream not only impacts performances he directs, but also may serve the needs of other groups. They are thrilled. Here we see Tom sharing a laugh with Priscilla, wife of Pastor Phil Newell and fellow minister at Portland Open Bible Church.

Tom and his friend Rob (I hope I got his name right…) shared the burden for restoring the interior and exterior of the church building. They worked day and night throughout the summer. Check out the results…

I’m very proud of Tom, Grace, and Rob and the work they have done to restore this building and to begin fostering a new dimension of civic pride in the local neighborhood. It’s the stuff of mission, the stuff of doing life with people on their terms so that relationships of trust may be forged over the long term.

Their inaugural production takes place soon. It is The Last Dance of Dr. Disco: A Murder Mystery. Performances are Saturday, Oct 27 & Nov. 3 at 7 pm and Sunday, Oct 28 & Nov 4 at 3 pm (doors open 1/2 hr early). Advance tickets are $10. $15 at the door. Seating is limited. If you are interested, leave a comment and I can give you the necessary information to procure tickets and find the location.
